    What Temperature Should a Sauna Be? An Operator's Guide

    The right operating range for a traditional sauna, why guests feel the difference between 75°C and 90°C, and how operators hold a stable band session after session.

    For a commercial traditional sauna, the working answer is 70–90°C measured at bench height. Most venues settle on a target band between 80°C and 85°C — hot enough that guests feel the proper Finnish-style heat, cool enough that a 15-minute session is comfortable for a mixed audience. Infrared cabins run far lower (45–60°C) and steam rooms lower still (40–50°C with high humidity); this guide is about traditional electric and wood-fired saunas.

    Why guests feel the difference

    A swing of 10°C inside the cabin is the difference between a guest leaving relaxed and a guest leaving early. Air temperature, bench-height temperature and stone temperature do not move together — the stones can be glowing while the bench is still climbing. That is why a single thermostat reading on the wall is not a reliable signal of readiness.

    Where the probe should sit

    • At bench height, not ceiling height — guests sit on the bench, not in the rafters.
    • Away from the heater's direct radiant path.
    • Away from the door, which cycles cold air every time it opens.

    How long it takes to get there

    A typical commercial cabin reaches 80°C in 30–45 minutes from cold. After a busy session, recovery to the target band is usually 1–3 minutes once the door closes.
