    Sauna Humidity: What's Right for Your Cabin?

    Why humidity matters as much as temperature, the working bands for traditional and steam-style saunas, and how operators keep both inside their target range across a busy day.

    Sauna humidity is the second number that defines the experience — and the one most venues never measure. A 80°C cabin at 10% relative humidity feels dry and harsh. The same 80°C at 25% feels rounded and breathable. Guests rarely describe it in those terms; they say the sauna 'felt off' and book somewhere else. This guide covers the working ranges for traditional Finnish, Bio, and steam-style cabins, and what causes humidity to drift during the day.

    These bands are operational defaults — what most commercial cabins target in normal conditions. The 'right' humidity for your venue depends on heater type, ventilation rate, guest expectation, and whether you pour water on the stones (löyly) as part of a guided session.

    Why humidity drifts during the day

    • Door cycles — every open door dumps moist air and pulls in dry replacement air.
    • Ventilation rate — under-ventilated cabins climb in humidity; over-ventilated cabins dry out.
    • Löyly frequency — water poured on stones briefly spikes humidity, then settles back.
    • Occupancy — guests add moisture through respiration and perspiration.
    • Ambient room conditions — a humid spa corridor changes what the cabin sees on intake.

    What 'too dry' and 'too wet' actually do

    A traditional sauna below 5% RH feels harsh on the throat and shortens session length — guests leave before they have had the experience you charged for. A bio sauna above 60% RH starts to feel oppressive and reduces heat tolerance. A steam room that drops below 95% RH stops looking like a steam room; the visible vapour disappears and guest perception collapses, even though the temperature is unchanged.

    Humidity is the difference between a sauna a guest finishes and one they cut short. If you only measure temperature, you are watching half the experience.
