What temperature should an ice bath be?
For most people, an ice bath sits between 4 °C and 15 °C. Commercial plunge operators in Ireland typically run a tighter band — 4 °C to 8 °C — because it is cold enough to deliver the response people come for, and stable enough to defend if a guest asks what they are stepping into.
Below 4 °C the water is approaching its densest point and the risk profile changes quickly: cold shock response, involuntary gasp reflex and reduced grip strength all become more likely, especially for first-timers. Above roughly 12 °C most bathers describe the experience as 'cool' rather than a plunge, and the perceived value of the session drops.
- 4-8 °C — the commercial operator band. Cold, credible, repeatable.
- 8-12 °C — beginner and recovery band. Longer immersions, gentler response.
- 12-15 °C — acclimatisation or open-water training temperature.
- Below 4 °C — specialist use only, with supervision and shorter immersions.
How long should you stay in?
The colder the water, the shorter the immersion. A common operator guideline is 2-3 minutes at 4-8 °C for an experienced bather, and 30-60 seconds for a first session. Total weekly cold exposure of around 11 minutes is the figure most often cited in the recovery literature — which means frequency matters more than heroics in any single session.
Publish the temperature and a suggested time next to the plunge. It sets expectations, reduces the number of staff questions, and gives you something consistent to point at if a guest reports feeling unwell.
Why holding the range is harder than hitting it
Any chiller can get a tank to 5 °C overnight. The operational problem is the next twelve hours. Every bather adds body heat, every lid-off period pulls in ambient air, and on a warm day an uncovered outdoor tank can drift 3-4 °C by lunchtime. That drift is invisible unless something is logging it.
Insulation and a cover change the answer more than tank size does. An insulated, covered 900-litre plunge can typically hold range on a fraction of the chiller runtime an identical uninsulated tank needs — which shows up directly on the electricity bill.

- Ambient gain: uncovered tanks track outdoor temperature through the day.
- Chiller duty cycle: undersized units never recover between sessions.
- Filtration and circulation: poor mixing gives a cold sensor and a warm bather.
Measuring it properly
A floating pool thermometer tells you the surface temperature at one moment. That is not the same as the temperature a bather is immersed in, and it is not a record. A continuous probe placed mid-depth, away from the chiller return, gives you the number that actually matters and keeps a history of it.
